Pearl mullet migration

Endemic to the Lake Van basin, pearl mullet migrate to fresh water each year from April. Fishing for them is prohibited from 15 April to 15 July.

Pearl mullet is an endemic fish that occurs naturally only in the closed basin of Lake Van.

According to the description in the TÜRKPATENT (Turkish Patent and Trademark Office) register, it “sets out on its migration from April onwards… returns to Lake Van towards the end of June, completing its migration journey.” The register describes its colour as “silvery greenish” and states that its scales have grey spots.

During the breeding period, 15 April – 15 July, fishing for, selling, transporting and storing it are prohibited; the ban also covers the beds of rivers and streams flowing into the lake.

Getting there: go to the mouths of streams flowing into the lake. Van districts bordering the lake: İpekyolu, Edremit, Tuşba, Gevaş, Muradiye, Erciş.
